Medieval re-enactment at la Ferté Clairbois

La Ferté Clairbois is a reconstructed medieval village and fortress serving as the setting for re-enactment of medieval life. You can explore, for example, the chapel, the smithy, the ramparts, the defensive towers, herb garden, stables, dining hall. There is also a central keep surrounded by a proper moat.
The highlight is the re-enactment of some element of medieval life, beginning at 15.00. Presentations may include dramatic performances of, for example, combat on horseback, sword fighting, archery, a demonstration of the pillory, etc. All performers are dressed in authentic costume, including the lord, his lady, squires, servants and children. There is a different programme each day of the week so you can choose what is most likely to appeal, or visit more than once.
On Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes, you can also dine on a medieval-style banquet served in authentic fashion in the "grande salle des lions", complete with real fire, minstrels, and other entertainment. The proximity of la Ferté Clairbois to the medieval town of St Suzanne also makes for an ideal opportunity to combine the two for a whole day of medieval history. Tickest are available for combined visits.
To enjoy the play and enactments to the full it is probably best to be fluent in French, since the language used is flowery and old-fashioned, or to have a knowledge of and enthusiasm for things medieval. However, no-one, fluent or not, can fail to be caught up in the excitement of the clash of swords (real sparks!), the thundering of charging horses, or the fierce guards.
The village is open every day except Mondays during July and August, entrance fees vary according to the presentation and whether you take a meal there. More information is available at their website.
